WHO?
Co founders Ericksen, PhD and Anna C have studied the effect of plastic on the worlds ocean's ove the past 10years, logging more than 15,00 miles. It is a non-profit organisation.
THE MISSION!
To document the impact of plastic waste in 5 sub-tropical gyres that exist in the North and South Pacific, North and South Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.
THE RESEARCH!
Algalita Marine Researchsupervises the lab work. Pangaea Explorations owns the travel vessel. Together they collect samples from the oceans surface and collect samples and measure the wieght and type of plastic floeting around the globe. They also research in to the plastic ingested by birds, fish and potential biochemical effects. The results and information is then presented in scientific journals and conferences.
WHATS NEXT?
During 2010 and 2011 they will sail 13,000 miles throuout the South Atlantic and South Pacific oceans to document the impact of plastic pollution, while also inviting legislators, educators and media to join the expeditions. This year, in Paris they are building another plastic bpat called 'STRA' which will float down the Seine Rives, across the English Channel and up the river Thames to London. In November they will be crossing the South Atlantic, but if we are luck we might be able to talk to Mrs Anna Cummins through satellite phone at our rally.
5 Gyres Project

We are trying to gain awareness of Plastic in the ocean and trying to help these organisations carry on with their much needed research if we are ever to get rid of the pollution that we have caused in our wonderous and beautiful oceans.
